To Build a Fire

by Jack London · 1908

A man travels alone through the harsh, freezing Yukon wilderness, accompanied only by his dog. As temperatures drop to 75 degrees below zero, he faces a life-or-death struggle after falling through the ice. His lack of imagination and inability to grasp the significance of the extreme environment turn his journey into a desperate, failing attempt to build a fire for survival against nature's indifference.
