Fridays at Enrico's

A Novel

by Don Carpenter · 2014

Fridays at Enrico’s, the posthumously discovered penultimate manuscript of Don Carpenter, follows four aspiring writers navigating the vibrant Beat‑era bohemia of Northern California and Portland in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s North Beach and Portland’s countercultural ferment, the novel captures the heady mix of youthful excitement, artistic ambition, love, and the inevitable loss of innocence that accompanies the pursuit of literary fame. Carpenter paints a tender yet unsentimental portrait of a generation of men and women whose expectations are constantly thwarted, offering a vivid snapshot of the early foundations of American counterculture.
