Ursula K. Le Guin’s award‑winning novel The Dispossessed follows Shevek, a brilliant physicist from the moon‑world Anarres, a society that has built an anarchist experiment without government or private property. When he discovers a revolutionary theory of time, Shevak feels compelled to share it beyond the isolated walls of his home. He journeys to the opulent, capitalist planet Urras, where wealth and power coexist with stark inequality. There, his genius is both celebrated and exploited, and he must navigate political intrigue, cultural hostility, and the personal cost of leaving his family behind. Through Shevek’s struggle to bridge two diametrically opposed worlds, Le Guin explores the tensions between individual freedom and collective responsibility, the possibilities and limits of utopia, and the ambiguous nature of any wall that separates us.
