In 1849 Baltimore, the famed poet Edgar Allan Poe lies in an unmarked grave, his reputation reduced to that of a drunken failure. Young lawyer Quentin Clark, a fervent admirer, refuses to accept this narrative. He dives into the murky final days of Poe, uncovering ignored clues and a web of political intrigue, a female assassin, and the city’s corrupt slave trade. Inspired by Poe’s own detective stories, Quentin seeks the real‑life model for C. Auguste Dupin, hoping the master sleuth can solve the mystery. As rival claimants to Dupin’s legacy clash, Quentin is forced to become the investigator himself, racing against powerful forces to reveal the truth behind Poe’s death and restore the poet’s legacy.
