The Shadow of the Torturer

by Gene Wolfe · 1980

In the far‑future city of Nessus, a young apprentice named Severian is expelled from the guild of torturers for showing mercy to a condemned man. Cast out, he embarks on a pilgrimage across a decaying empire, carrying the razor‑sharp blade of his order and a mysterious, ever‑changing notebook that records his thoughts. Along the way he encounters enigmatic scholars, ruthless warlords, and strange, almost mythic creatures, each encounter reshaping his understanding of truth, memory, and destiny. As Severian’s journey unfolds, the line between reality and imagination blurs, revealing a richly layered world where language itself is a weapon and the past haunts every step toward an uncertain future.
